Katarmal-Temple to the Sun God

Kumaon was the scene of great temple building from the 7th century A.D. to 1300 A.D. and 400 were built in the district of Almora alone-44 on Katarmal, one of the four hills that encircle the town. The most famous of these is the temple to the God Surya 9Bara Aditya), built over 850 years ago. At an elevation of 2,116 meters, it is 17km from Almora on Almora-Ranikhet road (3km on foot) cross the river Kosi. Little over one km beyond Katarmal, is Bikut forest, from where magnificent view of Almora is a delightful scene.
